Healthy You for Life classes in Suffolk
Children who weigh more than they should risk serious health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and artery-damaging high cholesterol. If your child has difficulty maintaining a healthy weight, Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters and the YMCA can help.
"Healthy You" is the region's only weight management program designed specifically for young people. It includes individual assessments, a 10 week series of healthy lifestyle classes and an 8-week membership to the YMCA. Parents and children will have the opportunity to:
Teen Class (ages 13 and up) will be offered in the spring.

Mary Immaculate Family Focus is pleased to sponsor an exciting six-week, research-based video and discussion workshop called Active Parenting Now. Active Parenting Now is organized around the parenting skills necessary for instilling cooperation, courage, responsibility and self-esteem in children. Parents will learn nonviolent discipline skills that really work and how they an set rules that their children can understand and follow. We will explore the goals of behavior and discover how the power of encouragement helps children learn positive behavior. Parents
will learn the importance of taking care of themselves as well as their child.

Doctor Dad
Involved fathers are important to the health and well-being of their children. But, how can dads learn to ensure the basic health and safety needs of their children? Doctor Dad is a groundbreaking workshop that enhances a father's parenting skills in caring for the health and safety of his infant or toddler. Doctor Dad delivers an interactive, structured learning experience. The workshop sessions include: The Well Child, The sick child, The injured child, and The safe child. This empowers fathers to become actively involved in the healthcare of their children, thereby enabling their children to flourish and set course for a healthy future. Dennis Gilbert, certified Doctor Dad, instructor will facilitate this free interactive workshop. Light refreshments provided.

The American Lung Association has developed the Asthma Educator Institute, a preparatory course for those qualified to take the National Asthma Educator Certification Examination sponsored by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB). Toddler Safety Class
Injury Prevention community health nursing students (ODU) and Healthy families partnership is offering a Toddler safety class. Each year many children are injured in their homes. This class will teach a practical, positive approach to home safety for parents of children ages 0-4. National Respiratory Training Center
The NRTC is offering its evidence-based and accredited distance-learning Asthma Assessment and Management Course in Virginia. The course usually costs $595, but for the first 20 that register and pay, we are providing scholarships, so the cost to the first 20 will be $100.
The course is a 12 week distance-learning program with two mid-course days. Continuing education credits are provided for Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Physician Assistants (AAPA), Respiratory Therapists (AARC) and Nurses (CA BRN - applicable nationally). The course covers (1) Asthma facts (2) What is Asthma and who gets it (3) Physiology of the respiratory tract (4) The mechanisms of Asthma (5) Initial assessment and diagnosis of Asthma and classification of severity (6) Controlling the things that make Asthma worse (7) Asthma medications and devices (8) Managing Asthma over time (9) Management of special populations and special situations (10) Patient education to promote self-management and (11) Spirometry. The course begins March 13, 2009 and ends June 5, 2009.
