Bon Secours Family Focus and the Garden of Hope, Inc. are pleased to cosponsor an exciting research-based video and discussion parenting workshop called Active Parenting of Teens. This program offers an effective and unique approach to improving parent-teen interaction. Parents will learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts and discuss such difficult topics as violence, drugs, alcohol and sex. The information and skills taught are designed to help you guide your children through the challenging teen years and develop responsible, cooperative teens who are better equipped to resist peer pressure. This program is designed for parents of children in middle and high school.

Free Training!!

CINCH Presents a One-of-a-Kind Training with  JUMP N ROPE.

As a part of a movement to get kids moving, CINCH is hosting a one of a kind training with JumpNRope expert trainers for sports, recreation , youth and after-school program staff. These trainings are sure to be energizing and interactive.

The goal is that attendees will become expert jump rope trainers and implement a jump rope program in 2013.

JumpNRope was founded in 2005 by 5-Time World Jump Champion Molly Metz to put the fun back into this iconic physical activity that is now a part of popular extreme sporting events. Click on the picture above to see her teams in action!

Those who complete this training AND agree to start a jump rope program for youth in their organizations no later than Spring 2013 will be eligible to receive:

• a certificate of completion

• a jump rope kit (for selected sites) containing competition style individual and double-dutch jump ropes

• individual freestyle jump ropes for program youth (while supplies last)

This training is FREE. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

Active Parenting 1-2-3-4 Parents! is an exciting research-based video and discussion workshop. This program is perfect for new parents and parents with children ages 1 to 4. Parents will learn the four stages of child development and how to enhance their child’s learning at each stage. They will learn about parenting styles and discover how to begin building a lifelong bond with their child. Parents will learn nonviolent discipline skills that really work, and how they can set rules that young children can understand and follow. Parents will discover how the power of encouragement helps children learn positive behavior at an early age. They will also learn the importance of taking care of themselves as well as their child.

Bon Secours Care A Van

The Bon Secours Care-A-Van is a mobile medical unit that travels throughout the Hampton Roads area providing health care to adults and children who are uninsured.  All services are free, but donations are welcome.  The Care-A-Van will provide general medical care for uninsured adults and children, routine evaluation and treatment of common acute illnesses including: respiratory infections, headaches, ear aches, pink eye, urinary tract and musculoskeletal pains, and chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.  We also provide sports physicals, children’s health insurance enrollment, and health education.

The Huffington Post reported today that the American Licorice Company is recalling its Red Vines Black Licorice as California health officials found high lead levels in a recent batch. It is so important to keep in mind that even in small quantities in products, lead exposure can have irreversible and harmful effects on young children. Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, loss of IQ, and other developmental problems that impact a child's ability to learn and succeed in school. We must ensure that all immediate measures are taken to prevent sources of lead in products from reaching the hands and mouths of our children and that these products are removed from the marketplace.

Please help spread the word about this product recall and about the ongoing threat posed by lead poisoning.

Business Case for Breastfeeding Program

As many of you are aware, last year CINCH successfully conducted a community implementation of The Business Case for Breastfeeding, a nationally recognized program to assist employers in developing worksite lactation support programs. Starting this summer, CINCH is looking to expand this successful program and provide information and technical assistance to a limited number of additional employers in South Hampton Roads.

Virginia Consumer Voices for Healthcare (VCV) is Virginia’s new, multi-constituency consumer
coalition focused on ensuring that all Virginians have access to affordable, high-quality health
care. VCV works to build and sustain a broad-based consumer coalition which includes patients,
community and religious organizations, small businesses, organized labor, community health
centers, and advocacy organizations to support effective implementation of the Affordable Care
Act in Virginia. Virginia Consumer Voices’ goal is to become the state’s leading consumer
coalition working year round to impact policy by organizing and coordinating the grassroots,
growing a dynamic and effective coalition, educating key affected communities, and running
public relations and media campaigns.
Organize Statewide Outreach

• Develop, coordinate and execute outreach activities in key communities of interest
throughout the state, with particular emphasis on underserved communities.
• Organize grassroots activities including town hall forums, focus groups, lobby days, and
training workshops.
• Educate and prepare health care consumers to participate in activities that expand access to
health care.
• Maintain regular contact with grassroots leaders across the state.
• Help Identify organizations within underserved communities to receive support to carry out
additional grassroots outreach and organizing.

Assist with Policymaker Outreach
 Engage state policy makers by inviting them to participate in outreach activities.
• Join Coalition partners and the Coalition Director in visits with key policy makers.

Help with Communications Efforts
• Work with Coalition Director and Leadership Team to develop necessary materials.
• Implement messaging and media strategies to engage consumers and amplify consumer
voices in the health care policy debate. Activities include:

o Manage the organizations social media outreach to grow Facebook and Twitter
activity.
o Run Facebook and Google ads to increase social media activity.
o Assist in updating and maintaining VCV’s website.
o Assist in creating and disseminating e-outreach updates to coalition partners and
email lists.
o Help organize Letter-to-the-Editor campaigns among consumers.
o Help organize press events.
o Help organize radio feature stories.
o Assist in communicating and increasing interest in coalition activities with state and
local media outlets.
o Assist in collecting human stories of Virginians helped by the ACA and disseminating
to state and local media.
o Develop a plan to produce and disseminate videos (YouTube) to tell health care
consumer stories.
o Help incorporate paid advertising such as billboards, radio/tv/print ads, bus posters,
etc. in key communities.

The Community Outreach Manager will report to the Coalition Director and work with
members of the VCV Leadership Team to ensure effective implementation of coalition efforts.
This is an exciting position for an individual with a passion for social change and an interest in
ensuring the voice of consumers is central in the health care debate in Virginia. The successful
candidate will possess a high level of energy to work with consumers across the state, have the
ability to motivate diverse groups of people to take action, be able to travel throughout the
state, and have excellent interpersonal skills. In addition, the ideal candidate will be able to work
independently, be highly motivated and maintain regular communications with the Coalition

Director and be accountable for all activities.

Qualified candidates must have:
• A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience in grassroots leadership
development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong understanding of and experience with social media.
• The ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work
environment.
• Excellent personal accountability and follow through.
• Passion for social, racial and economic justice and progressive political change.

The ideal candidate will have an understanding of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
Additional Information
Salary range is mid to upper $30’s depending on experience. The position comes with full
health and dental benefits, a retirement plan and paid vacation.

National Coalition Academy for Virginia

“It is the aim of CCoVA to help Virginia counties and municipalities develop strong and effective coalitions. The Academy is an intensive course designed to get coalitions “off to the right start.” It is the most cost effective approach the Institute has found of helping coalitions achieve results and document contributions to reach population change in rates of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Coalition teams of at least two people will receive three weeks of in-person instruction spread out across a twelve month period. Distance learning (Web-based Reinforcement Trainings) will be provided between onsite sessions. All aspects of coalition work will be thoroughly instructed including community assessment, problem analysis, logic modeling, designing and implementing interventions, strategic and action planning, evaluation, advocacy and policy advocacy, and sustainability.
