Mothers' Depression May Negatively Influence Children's Well-Being

Depression in mothers is likely to have a negative impact on children's health and educational outcomes, says a new research brief from the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. And the problem is at its most extreme among low-income families, as poverty is one of the strongest indicators of maternal depression. "We need our policymakers to pay much more serious attention to maternal depression -- particularly among low-income mothers -- as part of the larger efforts across the country to improve healthy developmental and school-readiness outcomes in young children," says Jane Knitzer, Ed.D., director of NCCP.
